Present to the Omnipresent

The Bible says that God is omnipresent. This essentially means that God is everywhere. There is nowhere that we can go where God won't be fully present to each one of us. And so the crucial question becomes how present are we to him? One of the biggest tragedies in the spiritual life is how little we are present to God's omnipresence. We are often too busy to notice him--too busy to pay attention. The sobering truth is that most of us function as atheists despite very strong beliefs. But perhaps all of this could be different. Perhaps we could learn how to pause and be fully present to God on a moment-by-moment basis.

One of the greatest spiritual disciplines that can be cultivated in the spiritual life is a constant awareness of God's presence. The practice of being present to God on a moment-by-moment basis breaks down the false dichotomy between sacred and secular--allowing even the most mundane and ordinary tasks to be fuzed with spiritual significance--freeing us from the tendency toward spiritual compartmentalization. Being present to God awakens us to the new life that has been available to each one of us.
