The fact that God is omnipresent means that connecting and relating to God largely hinges on our ability to be present to him--to be present to his omnipresence. This is why cultivating an awareness of God's presence in our lives on a moment-by-moment basis is perhaps the single most important spiritual habit that we can develop in our lives. But just because God is always present doesn't mean he will always seem present. Sometimes he may actually feel very far away. Typically this happens when life gets out of control. And life is bound to get this way every once in awhile. Real life is full of challenges and difficulties--some avoidable, other that are not. And when the cards seem stacked against us, our tendency is to begin to call into question God's presence. We begin to wonder if God is really there and if he can really be trusted.
But perceptions are often misleading. Just because life seems overwhelming doesn't mean that God is not present. The truth is that even in our most difficult and challenging moments God is still present and can be trusted. Learning how to rest in the presence of Christ no matter the situation allows one to discover the faithfulness of God. And discovering God's unwavering and faithful presence is a sure way to overcome despair.
